Description

All the test performed with 3 webcams showed that StopMotion only makes images full of green. On the contrary, the same software installed on Debian Squeeze instead of Lenny is working for at least 2 webcams (3rd not tested). The Debian package page reports the inclusion of a new library between Lenny and Squeeze: libv4l. This is almost the only modification. There is a Lenny backport available:

http://packages.debian.org/fr/lenny-backports/libv4l-0

However we need to recompile the Squeeze version of vgrabbj to make it use the library in Lenny…

A test achieved with a 4th webcam on Lenny gives the same green screen. Using the backported version of libv4l doesn't solve the issue but slightly changes the behavior: the capture is regularly changing from green to black! Looking at version numbers shows that the backported version number is 0.6.3-1~bpo50+1 as the Squeeze one is 0.8.0-1. The dependencies of this library are low:

dep:  libc6  (>= 2.3.6-6~) [i386]

So we can try to backport the Squeeze version to Lenny. We need both the library and the development package libv4l-dev, which has very few dependencies too.

Backporting the 0.8.0-1 version of libv4l works at least for one webcam under Debian Lenny :). We now need to perform tests on DDL.

Tests with 2 webcams on DDL were successful, the kernel may need upgrading but this shows that the issue is solved. Additional tests wanted!

Note that we currently cannot use a backported kernel because Live systems need a kernel module (squashfs) that is not compiled in the default Debian kernel configuration. Maybe later we'll take the time to build our own backported kernel…
