Description

We now know that there are many torrents available for DoudouLinux. However, as this is individual initiatives, there are drawbacks:

  • the seed may not be available (user's computer is simply off)
  • all languages may not be available (because there was not volunteer)
  • torrents may not be up to date (the volunteer hasn't heard of the new version)
  • we have no download figures for torrents

For these reasons this would be better to host our own torrent trackers and seeds. Many torrent servers exist but as we are currently hosted on a LAMP server only, we need a Php/Ruby application. It seems that this exists as this Google query shows:

It is possible to easily make a torrent file using mktorrent. It can specifies torrent web seed, which means clients will use our HTTP server as initial seed. The syntax is the following:

$ mktorrent -v -a http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce -w http://download.doudoulinux.org/file/livecd/1.1/doudoulinux-gondwana-1.1-fr.iso doudoulinux-gondwana-1.1-en.iso

Note that we need the ISO file locally in order to perform computation of pieces. We also need to specify our own torrent tracker in order to be sure to have it work and to make stats.

Torrent files can then be registered on freetorrent.fr. It is a good idea to use it as the announcer then ;):

mktorrent -v -a http://www.freetorrent.fr/announce.php -w http://download.doudoulinux.org/file/livecd/1.1/doudoulinux-gondwana-1.1-en.iso doudoulinux-gondwana-1.1-en.iso

Stats can then be fetched from their torrent pages.
