Description

Stopmotion files have an extension *.sto but are indeed tar archive files:

$ file -i test-stopmotion.sto 
 test-stopmotion.sto: application/x-tar

As a result they are opened by Xarchiver instead of Stopmotion. We need to declare sto files as a sub-class of tar files to be opened by Stopmotion.
